Introduction to XR Design

Beginner | $1,250 USD | 5 weeks

A 5-week live online course that focuses on learning the fundamentals and theory behind engaging XR design. This course will explore the mixed reality spectrum, how to generate an immersive sense of presence, how human factors affect our ability to experience XR, and how to effectively design XR interactions at the intersection of art and technology.

Courses are taught in live 90 minute sessions twice a week. The live sessions will cover 3D user interfaces, sound design, visual design, and accessibility.

Office Hours

2Sessions
/week

Office hours are held live twice a week for 90 minutes and are intended to give students support as they progress throughout the course.

Students are encouraged to bring questions which will be answered in real time. Troubleshooting, code logic questions, insights into design and more.

    1 Mixed Reality Spectrum

    Learning Outcomes:

    - What makes up the Mixed Reality Spectrum, and why it's key to capturing the "magic" behind VR and AR

    - How immersion and grounding generate presence in different ways along the MR spectrum


    - How to leverage the strengths and limitations of a particular technology on the MR spectrum in order to outperform physical reality, 2D computing, and other MR technologies.

    Learning Outcomes:

    - Human Centered Design, and why XR design is the most human-centered software

    - How the limitations of AR/VR technology are just as essential to designing for VR/AR as the strengths are

    - Practical technologies and implementations that leverage the strengths and limitations of VR/AR

    Learning Outcomes:

    - How to guide art direction to compliment technical limitations

    - The distinction between "good graphics" and "good art" in 3D rendering

    - How designers need to "hold the line" in key technical metrics in order to create a usable product

    Learning Outcomes:

    - How to set up spatialized sound in their choice

    - How to tune sound emission and acoustics to create a more immersive experience

    - The nuances of integrating physical and virtual sound spaces

    Learning Outcomes:

    - Create particle effects

    - Apply image effects to the final scene

    Jason has worked in the VR/AR industry since 2012 and worked with big data since 2016. He has built and managed over 25 applications and delivered projects for VR, AR, iOS, Android, custom hardware, web, and film. He has an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Digital Media.

As a Unity Certified Instructor, he is passionate about teaching the latest emerging technologies. He has an undergraduate degree in Game Development, a graduate in Interaction Design and a Master’s degree in Computer Science.

He has taught game and web programming/design at the University of Lincoln and the University of Sussex in the UK over a span of 4 years.
