UX Design Fundamentals for XR

A value-packed 40-hour on-demand online course that will teach you the fundamentals for designing UX solutions for augmented, virtual and mixed realities. Take the course which was built and designed by XR Design PioneerĀ Aleatha Singleton who has been designing XR solutions since 2017.

This course is also suitable for students without a design background.

Course Overview

This 40-hour on-demand course will prepare you to enter the UX for XR Design world with solid fundamentals. Created by XR pioneer and professional designer Aleatha Singleton, you will be guaranteed to get the best introduction to XR design.

By taking this course, you'll learn how to:

  • Apply the process of designing new experiences for XR
  • Identify the difference between designing for web and mobile software in XR
  • Use best practices for immersive environments and applications
  • Explain usability considerations when designing for XR
  • Transition your design thinking ideas to an XR medium
  • Use specific XR design tools and techniques when designing for VR
  • Design an XR portfolio piece to use as a supporting asset in your XR design career
PREREQUISITES
  • This is a beginner friendly course, no previous experience required.
REQUIREMENTS
  • PC or Mac with minimum: 3 GHz (2 cores/4 threads), 8 GB RAM, 8 Mb/s network bandwidth
  • Figma (download here)
  • Brainstorming applications (download Miro or FigJam)
  • VR headset is recommended if you want to get the most out of the course, but not mandatory
  • ShapesXR account and ShapesXR VR Prototyping application (download here)
  • Pen & Paper, Basic crafts items or Sketching app for storyboarding and bodystorming

Unit 1: UX Best Practices for XR

Estimated time 10 hours
In this unit, you will learn to understand the XR spectrum, specific human-centered design principles for XR and avoid common pitfalls.

Lessons: Mixed Reality Spectrum Overview, Human-Centered Design principles to XR Development, Functional XR Interaction principles, Dos and Dont's of Interaction Design, Basics of conduction research for XR

Now that you are familiar with the basics, you will learn how to use inspiration and analyze and convert 2D into 3D thinking and apply basic information architecture for XR.

Lessons: Analyzing 2D experiences for 3D experience conversion, Basic Information architecture structure for VR, Collecting Design Inspiration through Competitive Landscaping

In this unit you will learn how to break out of 2D and sketch interaction flows for VR while identifying assets and needs for the final UX designs.

Lessons: Utilizing industrial design methods and breaking out of 2D thinking, Sketch Interaction flows for VR, Identifying asses needed throughout the experience.

Estimated time 10 hours
In this unit, you will get familiar with the modern XR design tools and use them to prototype solutions for XR while performing and conducting basic usability UX tests.

Lessons: Utilize 3D modeling sources to gather assets for your Prototype, Figma and VR UI element prototyping, ShapesX, Basics of Conducting usability Testing

Course Project

While you are working through each unit, you will be applying the skills and knowledge that you're learning to your course project, a VR version of a travel planning and booking application.

Course Support

Although this is an on-demand course, we want to ensure all students feel supported as they work through their course content so we offer our C# students a weekly office hour and chat support through our slack community.

Office Hours

A weekly office hour is open to all UX Design Fundamentals for XR students, Monday through Friday. This time is best used to get help with course content. Many of our students love using this time for troubleshooting and reviewing code logic with one of our expert instructors

In addition to our open office hours, the community also shares weekly Circuit Stream announcements, XR newsletter with the latest trends, jobs, and much more. We encourage all students to use our various channels to get course support, communicate and network with other like-minded individuals!

Certification

After completing this course you will receive a certification badge. This badge acknowledges that earners have gained the practical knowledge and in researching, applying and using tools for XR design solutions. This includes understanding the basics of UX XR design, researching and recognizing best practices, converting 2D into 3D experiences and rapid prototyping with specific XR design tools.
